| 4 Comments | 438 views I have to say I was completely surprised to be contacted by a potential client today, who had taken the time to read over my personal blog. No surprised in the sense that it happened, but surprised by her reaction.
She ended up contacting me and that led to a phone conversation. It was a refreshing and enlightening experience for me, to say the least.
She absolutely loved my personal blog, the attitude and the no-bullshit tone was just up her alley. (And that was obvious in our convo.)
When starting this blog I did have some concerns one whether or not folks would be offended.
A year later I have discovered that they aren’t, and actually LOVE the “not too serious, straight-forward” approach… and yep, they even dig the cursing here and there.
While this blog is really for my entertainment, I think it’s great people are getting a kick out of it and at the same time finding some value in the content. (Really need to get the rest of my tutorials out.)
Anyway, she gave me some sage advice and I am going to take it. I’ve been in this industry so long and I have seen all the highs, felt all the lows and learned a lot of lessons along the way.
Usually when a potential client contacts me, it’s after they’ve been through hell and back with another developer or company. They are very skeptical, cautious and even at times just pissed off. Which is understandable.
Now I am not perfect. Nope… can’t say that I am. I have made bad choices and allowed my personal life to conflict with my professional. That has resulted in a less than desirable outcome. However, I DID learn from it… and refrain from making those same mistakes twice.
With that said, I have also seen a lot of bullshit in this industry. People trying to sell folks things they do not need, or just flat out sell crap with a pretty bow.
When I am approached for work this is clearly illustrated – I will get requests for development or tools that people DO NOT need. Most are completely unaware of what exactly they need to make their website a success. They’ve heard terms like “social media,” “tweeting,” “SEO,” and more.
It’s a complete clusterf*ck.
So – I am preparing an outline of topics I am going to write about based on my experience and exploration in this industry. The pitfalls, what to look out for, what to stay away from, demystifying the technologies, analyzing tools and resources… and what it REALLY means to social network.
