| 8 Comments | 289 views OK, I am a geek just as much as the next, and I love getting new technology. But, I also have some common sense about what I purchase, in that, it has to serve a function or purpose for me to justify the RIDICULOUS cost.
Seriously. The price for the phone, for what you get, is STUPID. Not to mention, the provider: EVIL AT&T. Which I got suckered into myself with my Blackjack.
Now, I have a few friends that forked up the cash for the iPhone, which gave me ample opportunity to play with their phones to determine if the buck is worth the hype. I also have a friend that purchased the new blackberry, which I have been evaluating.
Couple of things about the iPhone:
- The iPhone apps are sort of cool. But realistically, most are useless. The only real useful apps I have seen are for Google map (NOT GPS), finding a great place to eat, recipes and a few games. But nothing to justify the cost.
- The touchscreen keyboard just flat out sucks. When it comes to my Blackjack or the Blackberry, I can type just as fast as I can using a regular keyboard. iPhone’s keyboard is a major FAIL.
- Pictures suck. This was the real show stopper here. Not that I would use my phone anyway to take pictures, but seriously… my old Metro-piece-of-shit took better photos.
- OK, so they finally let you record videos with the new 3G S, but seriously? The only reason I can see wanting to record video is for conferencing. But guess what? The 3G S is not capable of sending video across WiFi in real time. So what’s the point?
- Resolution sucks. Period. Nor does it support HD.
- Can’t copy and paste. WTF… this is very basic in most phones. And you can forget sending media to your friends.
- No logical file structure. And you can forget doing multiple things at once. Seems they built the phone for noobs.
- Another bummer… no 3G modem. Oh and no bluetooth syncing with your other computers. Pfft.
Overall, the phone really serves no major purpose. Especially for someone like me.
I still see no reason for shelling out 300 bucks on something that is over-priced for its “technology.” Frankly, all of the major reasons someone would want a smart phone lack in the iPhone. Any features people defend for the iPhone which are “super cool” for them, are pointless for the rest of us. iPhone’s cool interface cannot make up for the serious lack in features I would want in a smart phone.
So far, the Blackberry has my vote. To read a better article that testifies to this: Why the iPhone sucks as a business machine.
I will NOT be shelling out the cash for the iPhone anytime soon. Still evaluating the Blackberry.
To be continued…

I’m right there with ya girl.
Geeky Bitch,
It’s nice to talk to you. But I have to tell you that your theory about the iPhone is not true at all.
In fact if you watch their new video it shows you all the things you mention above.
Have a good Day.

P.S Here’s the video http://www.apple.com/iphone/guidedtour/#medium
Lance,
You know you’re my brother from another mother, but we all know you are one of those people that love the bling.
I’ve watched the video — and I have tested the new iPhone, and the old iPhone, and, well, all of the issues I pointed out still remain.
So, I don’t have a “theory,” I have the facts.
Sorry my friend. It is what it is.
Geeky B.
Going to have to agree with the Geeky B on this one. I was hoping they would get it right with the new 3G. It might be a decent smart phone for some, but for all intent and purposes I think it misses the mark.
I’m not trying to “hate” on anyone that uses the iPhone. It really comes down to personal choice and purpose.
For me, if I am going to shell out that kind of cash, it better be on something that brings on the features I want. Currently, the iPhone doesn’t “bring” it the way they should.
I’m going to go ahead and agree, that while the Iphone is a pretty cool toy, ultimately, thats what it is, an extremely expensive toy. Blackberries have continuously proven to be a useful business phone, and more compatible than Iphones, I work in a very diverse business environment that includes both a corporate as well as hotspot type environments, and am frequently observing issues that affect only Iphones. If you feel that it’s not true that an Iphone is just an expensive play thing that can make calls and browse the internet, you’re welcome to provide links to reputable sources that back your position, although I personally don’t think you can ever fully trust what any corporation says about their product, just look at microsoft and all their talk about their softwares’ features, when they fail to mention half of it’s broke, incompatible, or requires special hardware/software/circumstances to work. It’s just bad business practice to admit the shortcomings of your products.
Heard the new Nokia is supposed to be kickass too.
I’m so with you GB. I actually purchased one, and then 3 weeks later my house was broken into and it was stolen. But I hated, hated, hated the touch screen keyboard. I have friends that just really love it, but it didn’t work for me.
The worst was realizing that I have a habit of sticking the phone under my chin and ear, and constantly putting my caller on speaker phone. Half the time I’d disconnect them trying to get it back in regular mode.
I like to think I’m as technical as the next geek – but that baby was not up my alley.
